Death and the Artists

How often must I shake my bells and kiss
Your forehead, gloomy and grotesque: forever?
How many arrows must I shoot and miss,
Aiming at Nature's mystery, you my quiver?

We might break many a clumsy armature,
We wear our spirit out in subtle schemes,
Before we get to contemplate the creature
We long for, sobbing in infernal dreams.

Some seek an idol they will never know,
And sculptors carrying the mark of Cain
Who hammer their own breast and their own brow

Long only for one strange and somber prize:
That when like a new sun Death fills the skies
The flowers at last will blossom in their brain.
